What Are Swim Spas & Hot Tubs?

So, what distinguishes swim spas and hot tubs from regular pools? While pools are usually large and costly, swim spas and hot tubs are typically more affordable and occupy less space. Also known as pool spas, they provide a balance between traditional pools and hot tubs; they are smaller than standard above-ground pools but larger than hot tubs, offering a space to swim, relax, and engage in water aerobics with a temperature setting of up to 99 degrees. Hot tubs are mainly designed for the enjoyment of hydrotherapy, with temperature settings that can reach up to 104 degrees.

Swim Spa vs. Hot Tub: Which Is Right for You?

Now that you have a basic understanding of what a hot tub and a swim spa are, let’s discuss how to determine which option is best for you. While both supercharge your backyard relaxation and exercise potential, the main difference between a spa and a hot tub is their size. Of course, if you prefer not to choose, you can always get a spa with a hot tub.

Swim Spa

A swim spa combines the enjoyable features of traditional pools with the therapeutic benefits of a hot tub. It uses a propulsion system or jets to create a current perfect for stationary swimming; you can adjust the speed and temperature settings to match your preferences. Think of it as always swimming upstream, which conditions your arm and leg muscles. Swim spas also include built-in hydrotherapy jets for aquatic therapy.

They are easier to maintain than traditional pools because they require fewer chemicals and take less time to clean. This is partly due to their lower water usage and built-in mineral filtration system. The swim spa cost will be significantly lower than that of a regular pool for these same reasons. Other advantages of a pool spa include its design for year-round use and the option to customize it with luxurious features, such as LED lighting and molded seats. They also create the perfect space for enjoying relaxing, quality time with family and friends!

Hot Tub

A hot tub spa is primarily built for hydrotherapy and relaxation, but it also serves as a delightful addition to small social gatherings. Hot tubs are considerably smaller than traditional pools, usually about half the size of swim spas. They come in various shapes, such as square or round, and include massage jets along with comfortable seating for submersion, with temperatures ranging from 100°F to 104°F.

Studies have shown that hot tubs provide numerous health benefits, including stress reduction, improved blood circulation, and cardiovascular health, as well as pain relief. However, along with these advantages, there are a few drawbacks. Hot tub prices can be high, depending on the size and features you select. Maintenance costs will also accumulate over time to keep everything in good working order.

To recap, what’s the difference between a spa and a hot tub? It’s about size, cost, and purpose. Once you’ve determined your budget, figured out the available space, and decided what you want to achieve, Maximum Pools is ready to start!

Congratulations on your brand-new pool and spa! Now that you’ve added a nightly soak to your routine, it’s very important to learn how to care for your pool properly. Review our tips for hot tub care and spa maintenance to ensure your new purchase stays in excellent shape.

For your hot tub:

  • Keep debris out of the water
  • Clean the shell and jets weekly with a sponge and white vinegar
  • Fight mildew growth on the cover with a 10% bleach-to-water solution
  • Drain it for a thorough cleaning every three to four months
  • Keep chemicals on hand (pH decreaser and increaser, alkalinity increaser, sanitizer, shock, and test strips)
  • Rinse filters with warm water or a garden hose at least once a week
  • Spray filters with a hot tub filter cleaner weekly
  • Soak filters when the tub is drained

For your pool spa:

  • Ensure water levels are correct
  • Keep the cover on when not in use
  • Change the water regularly
  • Maintain a steady temperature
  • Clean filters regularly
  • Test chlorine levels weekly
  • Keep chemicals on hand (chlorine, shock, alkalinity, algaecide, testing strips, and pH reducers and increasers)
  • Schedule professional inspections
  • Check and replace filters annually

*Regularity is dependent on the model

Winter Prep

To prepare your hot tub spa for winter, drain it thoroughly to prevent the water from freezing and damaging the plumbing, including the pump, filter, and heater. Next, clean the shell and filters, and use compressed air to blow out any remaining water. If you won’t be using the system during winter, we recommend adding antifreeze to the plumbing and activating the freeze protection settings, if applicable. If you plan to use it during winter, run the pumps regularly to keep the water circulating. Ensure you have a good, well-insulated cover to prevent heat loss. Consider adding a thermal blanket to help retain heat while reducing energy costs.
